Happy International Women’s Day!
Today I’m celebrating all of the women who’ve made me who I am today. My mom, sister, aunts, grandmothers, and great grandmothers. My friends, former professors, and pastor. The women who create my favorite podcasts, write my favorite books, and produce my favorite shows and movies. Women who have literally made history by giving us opportunities, rights, and space at the table. Yet, history has been made, in one way or another, by all of these women. They create beauty, speak with erudition, and form relationships that are deep, empathetic, and lasting.
In honor of this day, I wanted to share my own articles I’ve written about women, along with some on my page written by others. Hope you enjoy ♡
- Listening to Women in the Church: Throughout Time and Today
“Therefore, we hold both truths together: throughout history, including church history, women have predominantly been treated as less valuable than men, and throughout history, the church has usually treated women better than the surrounding culture.”
2. A Queen’s Gambit: God Isn’t Afraid of Women
“What could our world and our churches look like if we embraced the God who is not afraid to use both Mordecai and Esther to bring deliverance to God’s people? God is not afraid of women. What if men embraced Mordecai’s example and recognized that there are limits to what we are able to do, and that women can help us?”
3. Mary Was Trustworthy
“In the pages of holy Scripture, Mary is a reputable source. She’s not only a key witness for Luke’s gospel behind the scenes, with her insights coming through the voice of Luke. No, up close and personal, Mary’s own words were written down for us to hear. And now we call her words the Word of the Lord. (Thanks be to God).”
4. A Christian Response to Ophelia Benson—“God is merciful, but only if you’re a man”
“Therefore, if in Jesus we see the very face of God, then we see God’s tear-streaked face as He was greatly moved and troubled to see His friend Mary weep (John 11:33). If in Jesus we see the very face of God, we see God in a jostling crowd turn toward a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, who would have been labeled as “unclean” and “untouchable” by her community, but Jesus called her, “Daughter” (Mark 5:34, Luke 8:48, emphasis added).”
5. It Was the Woman Who Was Deceived: 1 Timothy 2:11-15
“So it’s true that the dominant practice in church history was to prohibit women from being pastors. But the reason was because women were thought to be less intelligent, emotionally unstable, and more susceptible to temptation.”
6. 1 Corinthians 11: Head Coverings, Subordination, and Equality
“Was woman made as a subordinate kind of helper? Was man made to do 75% of the work and woman to help with the other 25%? Is she an assistant or is she a co-laborer? What does it mean for woman to be created from man’s side?”
7. Absolutely Certain About Women’s Ordination
“Less than a year ago, my view on women in ministry began to get disrupted. Desperate for answers, I went to a wise professor, expecting him to give me a simple yes or no answer on whether women should be pastors.”
